PROJECT DURATION: 2023-24
AREAS OF OPERATION: KHED BLOCK, PUNE DISTRICT MAHARASHTRA
Overview:
This project addresses water security issues through conservation measures, improving water availability for agriculture and domestic use, while promoting sustainable livelihood development in the region.
Additional Water Storage Created: 3.626 crore liters
Hydro-Geophysical Investigation for Aquifer Mapping in 3 villages
Micro-Forests Developed: 4 plots
Need of the Program:
- Khed Block suffers from low annual rainfall (729 mm) and high surface runoff/erosion.
- Inadequate irrigation and groundwater depletion affect agricultural productivity.
- Lack of rainwater harvesting, silted water bodies, and limited awareness of conservation practices contribute to water scarcity.
Hydro-Geophysical Report for Aquifer Mapping and Groundwater Recharge Zones
The hydro-geophysical investigation was conducted to address the persistent challenge of declining groundwater levels in project villages, exacerbated by erratic rainfall and inadequate soil and water conservation practices. The report emphasizes the conservation and management of both surface & groundwater resources, with a focus on creating self-sustaining groundwater recharge systems.
Objectives:
- Geological and lithological mapping
- Geophysical investigation of subsurface characteristics
- Hydrogeological mapping and aquifer identification
- Identification of groundwater recharge potential zones
Establishment and Monitoring of Observation Wells:
28 Observation Wells were established to monitor groundwater levels and quality, ensuring long-term water security.
Achievements:
- 36,269.5 cubic meters desilted from 6 water bodies
- Created 3.626 crore liters of additional water storage
- Constructed/repaired 9 water conservation structures
- Conducted hydro-geophysical investigations for aquifer mapping
- Training sessions on water stewardship were held in 3 villages, benefiting 400 individuals. Micro-forests were created in 4 plots to improve biodiversity and climate resilience in the region.
