AREAS OF OPERATION: 20 VILLAGES, SINNAR, NASHIK, MAHARASHTRA

Overview:

The Goat-Based Livelihood Project, initiated in 2021 with the support of the Rambha Charitable Trust, has emerged as a transformative initiative in the Sinnar block of Nashik district. This project focuses on empowering women through sustainable goat farming, fostering economic independence, and promoting environmental conservation. Over the past three years, the project has seen remarkable growth in both the goat population and the economic well-being of the beneficiaries. It has significantly enhanced the livelihoods of many women, establishing a sustainable model for economic development and community empowerment.

Key Achievements:

  • JLG: The project formed 445 JLGs involving 2,225 women, enabling access to project services for 2,050 women. Monthly village meetings engaged 5,649 members in reviewing work, planning activities, and promoting continuous learning.

Trainings:

  • 40 village-level JLG training sessions involved 1,115 members covering goat business, vermicomposting, silage prep, and vaccination.
  • Financial literacy sessions engaged 1,971 members on saving, expenditure, investment principles, and government insurance schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana.

Veterinary Care: 7,434 goats received veterinary care through Pashusakhis, reducing mortality rates and promoting vaccination. 29,088 goats were vaccinated in 20 villages against various diseases, improving overall health and productivity.

Goat Insurance: Information on goat insurance was regularly provided, resulting in 546 goats being insured for a sum assured of INR 5000, providing financial protection to the farmers.

Women’s Melawa event:

  • Attended by 641 women goat rearers
  • Discussed women’s economic empowerment, cybercrime awareness, health, and rights advocacy
  • Showcased increasing involvement and empowerment of women

Business Management Training:

  • Provided specialized training for 67 JLG members
  • Enhanced skills in managing goat farming businesses
  • Contributed to improved livelihoods

Infrastructure Development and Sustainable Practices:

  • Goat Herd Expansion: JLG members added 606 goats, boosting herd size and economic assets.
  • Goat Shed Construction: 140 sheds built by JLG members, improving shelter and livestock health.
  • Fodder & Vermicompost Demonstrations: 113 fodder and 40 vermicompost demos enhanced sustainable fodder management and organic composting skills.
