Overview:

The WADI (orchard) project, initiated by NABARD and implemented by Yuva Mitra, is a comprehensive socio-economic rehabilitation initiative aimed at transforming wastelands into productive orchards. The project targets 450 small and marginal farmers, along with 50 landless individuals from Scheduled Tribes, in the Nandurbar block of Maharashtra. By promoting horticulture, forestry, and vegetable cultivation, the project seeks to enhance the livelihoods of these communities through sustainable agriculture and allied activities. The project’s holistic approach includes water resource development, social and health programs, capacity building, and training, focusing on creating a diversified portfolio of income-generating activities.

Key Achievements

Horticulture Plantation & Maintenance:

Outcome: 200 farmers prepared 50 pits each for mango and guava plants, filled with a nutrient-rich mix. Seedlings were planted and are being actively nurtured.

Water Resource Development:

Outcome: Distribution of 200-litre plastic drums to all 200 farmers for irrigation and organic pesticide preparation. Drip irrigation units were provided to 173 farmers, petrol engines to 25, and submersible pumps to 2 farmers.

Vegetable Cultivation:

Outcome: Farmers participating in the WADI project earned an additional income of approximately Rs. 30,000 each from the cultivation of Wal Papdi vegetables.

Health Program:

Outcome: Two health camps were conducted, benefiting 242 individuals. Additionally, two health awareness sessions on waterborne diseases, nutrition, and primary care reached 240 participants.
