SUPPORTED BY: SPANDAN SAMAJ SEVA SAMITI AND GLENMARK FOUNDATION

LOCATION: AKKALKUA AND DHADGAON BLOCK OF NANDURBAR DISTRICT

Overview:

This project, aims to transform the cooking practices of 3,500 households in 30 to 35 remote villages in the Akkalkuwa and Dhadgaon blocks of Nandurbar District, Maharashtra. The primary focus is on improving indoor air quality, enhancing health outcomes, and reducing environmental impact through the distribution of the innovative NEERDHUR Smokeless Chullahs, designed by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), a constituent laboratory of CSIR.

Innovation Highlight:

The NEERDHUR Smokeless Chullah, developed by CSIR-NEERI, represents a breakthrough in sustainable cooking technology. This multi-fuel, improved cookstove has been meticulously engineered to address the health hazards associated with traditional cooking methods, particularly in rural and tribal communities. The NEERDHUR stove offers significant advantages in terms of thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, and emission reduction, making it an ideal solution for households reliant on biomass fuels.

Key Features of NEERDHUR:

Multi-fuel Capability:

The stove can efficiently burn wood, agro-residues, charcoal, biomass pellets, etc., providing flexibility in fuel use

High Thermal Efficiency:

NEERDHUR stoves boast a thermal efficiency ranging from 30% to 42%, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and cooking time

Reduced Emissions:

The stove achieves over 60% reduction in harmful emissions (PM2.5 & CO), contributing to a healthier indoor environment

User-friendly Design:

The stove is designed for maximum convenience and safety with an adjustable fuel grate, improved combustion chamber, and easy-to-use front-feeding fuel tray.

Durability and Safety:

NEERDHUR stoves are made from durable materials like stainless steel and Bakelite, with an estimated lifespan of 2-3 years, supporting a weight of up to 70 kg.

Key Interventions:

Smokeless Chullah Distribution:

Provide 3,500 NEERDHUR cookstoves to households.

Environmental Care Groups:

Form and train 350 women-led ECGs for project sustainability

Community Education:

Conduct IEC and BCC workshops
